Whats the difference between Paper and Canvas?

Most often we get one question from our customers. "Whats the difference between Canvas and Paper? And what looks best for the image I choose?"

Well, there is no one right answer to these questions. All the finish options that we carry are excellent at reproducing images and are chosen specifically for the richness in colours and longevity of prints they offer to the customers. However there are some differences between each finish. Read further to understand the differences between each finish.

The Hahnemuhle Daguerre canvas is an Archival canvas that offers a fine structure which is particularly good for fine art photo printing. Its bright white point provides clear fresh colours and contrasts for black and white reproductions. Its made from Poly Cotton and soaks in the colour deeper and retains them longer. They are also easier to maintain and can withstand exposure to open air and dust better. The Canvas is the thicket option we carry at 400 GSM.

The Hahnemuhle Photo Rag is another Archival finish that we offer which is a bright white cotton paper. The Photo Rag is also 100% Cotton based and is often preferred for images with high contrast. With that said the colours reproduced on the Photo Rag are bright and vibrant. They have a coarse feel and will enhance the textures in a image. Maintaining the photo rag is relatively simpler, as long as they are kept out of high moisture zones. The paper is 310 GSM.

The paper is 167 GSM.
